Cranksets are composed of crank arms and chainrings. Choosing the right crankset is not only in regards to the aesthetics of your bike, but it is also going to dictate how it is going to pedal. The two factors influencing that are your gear ratio and the stiffness of the crankset.
A gear ratio is the division between the number of teeth on your chainring and the number of teeth on your rear sprocket. A higher ratio means you will accelerate faster, but you have a reduced top speed, while a lower gear ratio means that it will be a bit more difficult to accelerate, but your overall top-speed increases. Stiffness, is determined by how much the part bends and absorbs the force you put in pedalling.
